HR Update on Brexit’s Impact on Employment

What is changing?

Current political uncertainty is making it very difficult for employers to predict scenarios and challenges they may face when (or dare we say ‘if’) the UK leaves the EU. However, there are some measures that can be taken now with regard to safeguarding you as employers and supporting your employees to continue living and working in the UK.

What do I need to know?

EU nationals need to apply for settled status in order to continue working in the UK, unless they have Permanent Residency or Indefinite Leave to Remain/Enter. Currently, they have until June 2021 to apply for settled status but if the UK leaves the EU without a deal that deadline is brought forward to December 2020.

What do I need to do?

  1. Speak with any EU national employees to ascertain whether they have applied, or are in the process of applying, for settled status under the government’s EU Settlement Scheme, and offer any support that may be needed to help them through the process.
  2. Obtain a copy of the government’s letter confirming the employees’ status and keep on file.
