HSE Statistics 2024
The latest statistics on work-related health and safety in Great Britain have been published, including the following key annual figures (2023/24):
1.7 million working people suffering from a work-related illness, of which
776,000 workers suffering work-related stress, depression or anxiety
543,000 workers suffering from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder
2,257 mesothelioma deaths due to past asbestos exposures (2022)
138 workers killed in work-related accidents
87 members of the public were killed in work-related accidents in
604,000 working people sustained an injury at work according to the Labour Force Survey
61,663 injuries to employees reported under RIDDOR
33.7 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury
£21.6 billion estimated cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2022/23)
The total number of deaths for 2023/24 is higher than the previous year (135) but is in line with pre-pandemic levels. The industries with the highest deaths were construction (51), agriculture, forestry, and fishing (23), manufacturing (16), and admin and support services (12).
The main kinds of fatal accidents for workers were falls from height (50), struck by moving vehicle (25), struck by moving object (20), trapped by something collapsing/overturning (15) and contact with moving machinery (8).
With 2025 around the corner strategically focusing resources on these areas can drive a safer working environment. Gain feedback from employees on these areas for any areas of improvement.
