Seasonal, Temporary and New Workers
It that time of year when many seasonal jobs are being filled. It is important that employers
protect the health and safety of new, gig economy, agency and temporary workers. The risk
of accidents for new workers is equally high in their initial 6 months as it is for the entire
duration of their working life.
6 Steps to Protect New Workers
1. Capability
Evaluate the new worker’s skills considering, literacy, numeracy, work experience, overall
health, physical ability and familiarity with the job and environment.
2. Induction
Provide an induction. Guide new workers by walking them through the workplace or site,
pointing out the main hazards.
3. Control measures
Ensure current control measures are in place to mitigate risks. Confirm proper use and
maintenance through:
• Discussions with employees and safety representatives
• Emphasising the significance of reporting accidents and near misses
• Arranging health surveillance (where required)
• Supplying/maintain appropriate personal protective equipment
4. Information
Provide relevant information, instruction and training on the risks for new workers, along
with the necessary precautions to mitigate these risks.
5. Supervision
Provide adequate supervision, ensuring new workers are informed about raising concerns.
Acknowledge that new workers might hesitate due to unfamiliarity and inexperience when
expressing concerns.
6. Check understanding
Verify workers comprehend the necessary safety information and training, ensuring they
apply it, especially in the initial days and weeks. Confirm workers know how and who to
raise health and safety concerns to and are aware of emergency arrangements or procedures.
